ASK AN EXPERT

June  2010

Q:  What do other professionals on LinkedIn do to get noticed, and/or increase their exposure while looking for new jobs?

I am actively pursuing new Regional Sales Manager opportunities throughout the Detroit Metro area and I have found BeFoundJobs.com to be a great resource for free helpful information & videos for job seekers. I'm now amongst the top couple of search results in my field on both Google & LinkedIn, so I can now easily be found with several very common & competitive search queries.

What tips, tricks, tactics, strategies or resources do you recommend?

Rob Liva
Sales Manager, Detroit

A.    I can only speak from the recruiter's perspective but can tell you what helps people be found from my purview. I would have to imagine that an experienced LinkedIn user working directly for a hiring company would use similar strategies so hopefully this will help. With millions of people on this site, I'd first suggest that you tweak your header on your profile to be more specific to automation/electrical focus. You've got the biggest names in the industry under your belt, Omron, RA, Kendall, EESCO...capitalize on that. There are so many people with a similar tag line that yours won't stick out. Often times when looking for people who, like you, want to be found...their introduction seems too vague to figure out what exactly they do. You did a good job of framing up what you'd be a likely fit for and I'd suggest adding something to that first section that highlights the powerhouse companies you've worked for, be a bit more specific on the industry so you're more easily found for those who are looking for your specific talent. You've done a good job of adding recommendations as well. There are a variety of electrical manufacturing/automation/distribution groups on LI and I believe you can link to them directly from my profile page. If interested, jump onto my profile, I'm in most of the bigger groups. This will also help you get visibility through the groups of similar type professionals. Adding content in these groups will also help your visibility. On your home page, post updates regularly to keep your name out there and link that to your Twitter account. Personally I hate Twitter, I don't get it but I can tell you that there are a ton of companies that are using it in their recruiting efforts. I hope it helps!
