Hiring Advice

When you prepare for an interview, phone or in person, remember you’re competing against at least 2 – 3 others for the position. So, remember the following to set you apart and prove your interest and excitement for the opportunity.

● Write thank you notes. Thank you notes should be short, about 2 paragraphs. Reiterate your interest in the position and ask about next steps in the interviewing process. Email the thank you to everyone you met in the interview, within 24 hours of the interview.

● Research the company. Review their website and write down your questions. Google the company name and read other articles about them. If you know anyone that works or has worked for them, talk to them. Look up everyone you’re meeting with on LinkedIn and read their profiles, so you understand their history and their career path.

● Bring examples of your accomplishments. Take time before the interview to think about your 3 most proud career accomplishments, within the past 3 – 5 years. Use the STAR analysis to quantify your accomplishment(s) i.e. you increased sales by x%, saved the company x amount of money, improved inefficiencies, etc.

● Appreciate HR’s role in the process. They have an overall view of the company and the company’s culture. Ask HR questions about the company’s culture, what keeps them there, what makes someone successful there or fit in well.
